Too Many Books?

Some sweet friends asked me last week how to organize and declutter the books.  Like I know.  haha

"Michele - do you have a blog post about purging books... I have a major book problem. Especially children's books. And with kids ages 9, 8, 5, and 2, nothing's really outgrown yet so I don't know what criteria to use to get rid of anything!"

Yep, it is hard.  Which is why you have not seen a post around here about it until now.  They kind of put me on the spot. ;)  It is also why I am going to turn this post over to my wise daughter in a moment and let her guide you.  She is a minimalist, remember - but she LOVES books and could have books problem like the rest of us if she was not very careful.  She also guilts shames helps me hold my book problem to only a minor problem.  Mostly.

Before she gets you all straightened out let me say this -

I love books.  Biographies, fiction, children's books, antique books, it doesn't really matter.  In the past I have not been too picky.  Now I am trying to be more so.  I also do own an iPad on which I download books to read.  Many of them are still sitting there to read because I forget about them.  It is a concept that I embrace, but not one I am real good at implementing.  Yet.  I am trying.  We also are trying to utilize the library more.  Don't get me wrong, we have always loved libraries.  But in the past we have just added those books to the dozens a month we bought.  Now we are trying to let the library buy the books and just borrow them instead.   Keep in mind, that I also have kids in four very distinct age groups so I understand that problem.  I am also a military wife and we move.  Often.  And my husband is sure that most of our weight is in books.  He may be right.  SO that being said - here's Ashton!

As mom mentioned, I am pretty minimalistic in many ways, but my biggest weakness is books.  I love books. I actually own a NOOK and have the NOOK and Kindle apps on my phone but still, I have this need to hold a real book.  I have, however, been thinking about ways to cut back on books. It started when we moved and almost all of my books were packed up in boxes and then re-packed in tubs because there simply isn't space in my room for them. So I've been without most of my books for almost a year now. And while I have missed many of my books, but there are others that I had forgotten I had. Clearly those need to go.

If you go through your books, you will probably find you own different books for different reasons. The first step is to decide why you own a book. Is it because...
1. You love it - This is a great reason to keep a book. If you plan to read it over and over again, by all means, keep it.
2. It is helpful/a frequently used reference book - If you garden, keep the gardening books you use the most. But if you never garden, don't keep books on gardening.  With the internet, you might be able to do without owning a dictionary, or more than one dictionary.  Do you use that book often enough to warrant keeping it, or it is good enough that you can check it out at the library?
3. Someone gave it to you - Sometimes this is a good reason to keep a book. Most of the time it is not. If it was a gift and you are never going to read it or you didn't love it, pass it on to someone who will read it and love it. And let us all pledge to stop giving coffee table-type books as gifts. Thank you.
4. It makes you look intelligent - This is not a good reason to keep a book. You are going to look downright un-intelligent when you have to confess that you haven't actually read War and Peace, but you keep it on a prominent shelf to make people think you have read it.
5. You might need it someday - How likely is it that you are really going to need that book on...whatever obscure topic? Give it to the library and you can borrow it if you do end up needing it.
6. You needed it...once - But do you need it now? Yes, you needed that text book in college, but do you need it or reference it now?

If you are overwhelmed, start with a shelf. Pull out a book. Do you love it? Yes? Great, put it back on a shelf. No? Ok, so why do you own it? If you haven't read it, do you honestly plan to? If you have read it but don't like it, why are you holding on to it?
Bottom line, if you wouldn't read it or reference it again, don't keep it. It is pretty much that simple (or not).

Antiques. I love antiques, and I used to own a lot of antique books. But I realized that they were a problem, for several reasons. First of all, few of them were books I would actually read. Second, few of them were in good enough condition to actually be read. Third, I have serious allergies, and dust and mildew and mold create huge problems for me. Guess what old books usually contain? Right. So now I don't keep an antique book unless it is a book I actually want to read (and love) and it is actually readable. (I now only own the Bible Dictionary in the picture up there.) It does you no good to have an antique Dick and Jane if it is falling apart and you can't let your kids actually hold it and read it. Let a museum or library or decorator have it (and antique books usually sell pretty well).

Collecting. I hereby confess to owning every one of the 50 original Nancy Drew books. But I am absolutely head-over-heels in love with them. They are special because some of them were mom's, others I found and family found for me, and I just love reading them. I am a total Nancy Drew nerd. And before they were packed away, I read them all the time (they are the perfect length to read during lunch, just saying). So if you love a series, keep them. But don't keep a series if you don't love it or just to keep it. And books are meant to be read, not looked at. Oh, and no multiple editions. Trust me, you can only read one copy at a time.

Children's books can be harder, but there are ways to manage them.

1. Only keep books your children like (within reason). Don't hold onto books just because you like them, especially if your children do not like them. Of course, there will be exceptions to this one.
2. Stick to favorites and classics. When choosing which books to keep for the next child or even their children, stick to the favorites and classics. Choose books that mean something and skip the Tonka truck and Barbie books (unless those are the ones that mean something to you). Also, skip the ones you can easily find at the library.
3. Be careful with "classics." Ok, I am about to tell you a dark secret. Many books that are considered "classics" are actually terrible books. There. I said it. Don't keep a book because it is a classic, keep it because it is good. This goes for any "classic" book.
Example. I can't stand The Scarlet Letter. (Please don't come after me.) I know there is great symbolism, history, etc. etc. etc. in that book, but I thought it was terrible. So I don't own a copy. If I ever hit my head really hard on something and want to read it again, it is easily found at the library and is not taking up space on my shelf in the meantime.
4. Focus on books for all ages. I am always amazed at what little ones pick up by just listening. And while it is great to have books at their level for them to enjoy, they are also capable of listening to and enjoying many books meant for older kids. They may not catch every detail, but someday they will.

I am sure there are more ideas that I'll think of later, so this post might have a part 2, but I am not promising anything...And while my books are packed away right now, I will definitely be donating a bunch when I unpack them someday soon!
What did I miss? Are there tips you would add? Do you hoard books like mom? =)

So, on our last day we are Clearing out the Clutter in our health!

The first stop in the health day is your medicine cabinet.
I feel like I should have some creepy music   playing here. ;)  I am willing to bet that yours is as bad as mine once was.

See that?  Past tense.

It is now clutter free!
Your turn!

The easy step - throw away anything that has expired.  Yes, I know that many will say meds can outlast their expiration dates, but I am taking no chances.  Especially with my kids. (Just be sure that you dispose of your old medication in a safe and responsible way!)

Next step - throw the rest away!

OK, go with me here.  Yes, I admit to having a few "emergency" over-the-counter medicines around. My husband worships, oops-uses a lot of Motrin.  And I do keep a few other essentials around - think Benedryll for my allergic people.  But for the past few years we have been investing in and regularly using essential oils.

There, I said it.

Out loud!

Yes, we have gone to the dark side.

Well, the natural side.  It started with all of the dyes in children's medicines.  They are bad for you, by the way.  We have a kiddo who is sensitive to dyes.  Even if yours are not - dyes are not good.  Take my word for it.  I can not for the life of me figure out why companies put bad things in medicines that are supposed to make us better and healthier.  Vitamins are another example - don't even make me go there.

So, in search for more natural meds we found essential oils.  They have worked for our family.  The more we use them, the more we trust them and the faster we turn to them instead of the pharmacy stuff.

DO not hear me wrong.  We do still get sick sometimes.  We do sometimes go to doctors.  We even take medicines if prescribed.  But that is not our first defense anymore.  Oils are.

Peppermint for headaches and stomachaches.
Peace and Calming for a hyped child at night.
Lavender for insect bites and scrapes and burns.
Chamomile for better sleep.
And on and on.

Try it, you might like it!

Dyes and chemicals.  Just a recap - bad. for. you!  Get them out of your home and your food as best you can.  We make our own laundry soap and cleaners.   We eat as much food from the local farms as possible.  And when in the grocery store we look at labels.  (and then Mom breaks down and buys a Diet Coke.  For me, of course, not them!  Just being honest!) A few other things you may want to look into - elderberry syrup (when we took this faithfully we had a whole winter season of not being sick,  including a first year college student), local bee pollen (the one thing so far that has helped the same college student better manage her allergies), and Grapefruit seed extract.

The point is that 80-20 rule.  If you are aiming to eat healthy 80% of the time, hopefully your body can manage the 20% of less than stellar choices better.  Let's face it, fast food sometimes just happens. We shouldn't beat ourselves up over  it...just not go out to eat daily.

Exercise.  Yuck!  I wish I could leave it at that but we all know that would not be right.  Tempting, but not right.  Again, at the very least, at least try to get outside daily.  Take a walk around the yard. Then the block.  Then add a bike, or some weights or a few sit ups.  There are seasons that I love my treadmill and it helped me lose 20 pounds a year ago (yep, need to get back on it), but I am a struggling exerciser.  Luckily I have one daughter that shames me into it often and enough guilt of my own to try to stay moderately active.  Hey, whatever works.  Just get moving!

And the purpose of it all?  Why am I passionate about clutter - and getting rid of it?

I want to live with purpose.  I want to live with joy.  I want to live life to its fullest.

And I am more convinced each day that to do so, I must maintain my home, head, heart, homeschool and health in such a way that does not distract me from the more important things God has for me. Many of those things that fill our lives are good.  But I purpose to have them only be the BEST!  The rest of the clutter- be gone!

May you live a clutter free life.  And may you be blessed!

Clearing out the Clutter- Our homeschool

I told you this would be a lighter subject.  Lighter, but not necessarily easier! haha  I have told you before that I am somewhat of a curriculum junkie.  OK, I am a serious curriculum junkie. Have been since God led our family down the homeschooling path over 15 years ago. Becoming a product reviewer...well, let's just say it has not helped my problem.

I love books.  I love notebooks.  I love workbooks. And flashcards and games and computer software and pens and pencils and you get the point.  I also love seeing it all out- in full display mode.  Well, I use to.

I have had a few cool homeschooling rooms in our many houses. (military, remember?)  Think bookcases lining the walls filled with books that may or may not have been categorized and then organized by height.  No snickering.   And drawers of supplies and stacks of papers.  What usually happened was for the first half of the year it all made me smile.  Look at all this stuff.  For the second half of the year it made me crazy.  LOOK. AT. ALL. THIS. STUFF.

It is time to clear out the clutter in our homeschools!

Don't worry, I am fully aware that half of my homeschooling friends just quickly left the building.  Get rid of curriculum and books?  She must surely jest!

Nope, no joke!

Luckily we move often so my problem did not last for as long as it could have.

Unluckily, I am not a fast learner so every new house I would set up that fun school room and then just repeat the scenario.

Then we moved to a house with no school room and had to make some changes.  Thank you, Lord, for changes.  Out of necessity I bought  plastic bins and labeled them by grades.  Then I put all the curriculum into those bins and stacked them in a a closet.  Yay me.

Of course, when doing so I found I could not fit all of one grade in some bins.  I sorted and purged to make it fit.  Yay me.

Then I bought a hanging shoe organizer and fit all of the supplies into it to hang on the closet door.  I kept out a few things for immediate use, but the rest went in the organizer.  Yay me again!

Then I put all of those not yet used notebooks and lined paper and folders and construction paper into a three drawer bin and promised myself to not buy any more until these were used up.  More yay me!

And the extras, time to move them on to a new home.  Just not mine.

Yes, I do have two white cabinets from Walmart where I keep reference books and art supplies and foreign language stuff etc. but I limit myself now to what will fit.  Something new comes in, something old goes out. There are people out there who can use it and need it more than we do.

It is not a competition to see who can acquire the most curriculum.  I promise.  Yes, it is nice to have things at your fingertips, but gluttony comes in pretty packages sometimes.  Let's don't be fooled by need versus greed.

Guilty here.  And making changes- to clear out the clutter in our homeschool and bless others with  the extras.

How about you?

So today- Clearing Out the Clutter in our hearts.  Not gonna lie- this will be the hardest for me to write, hands down.

Let's face it, the state of our heart affects the state of our life.  It is just that simple.  And that complicated.

If we are harboring fear, we live our lives differently.  Yep, this is one I have struggled with. ( I am pretending with the whole past tense thing)  Fear and worry have always been a struggle for me.  I used to tell friends "why stop, I am so good at it".  When my health went south a few years ago, fear just about consumed me.  Then my body got just as good at reacting as my head did.  It is one thing to talk your head out of something, but it is an entirely different thing to talk your body out of a physical reaction to fear.  Take it from one that has been there- FEAR is clutter that you can do without.  Get to the root of it, deal with it and move on!  God wants better for you.  He HAS better for you.

If we are harboring hurt and anger, we live our lives differently.  Yep, been there too.  Still am, truth be told.  I was hurt by someone that should be on the top of the list to love me most.  Instead they have not spoken to me in almost two years.  The hurt has built up and turned to anger.  Just last week I saw this post from a friend...

On what it means to forgive..."But this is not cheap pardon. There is real loss. In Jesus's parable (Matthew 18), the master was willing to lose the unimaginable amount of ten thousand talents in order to pardon and keep the servant a free man. The master in effect said "I will suffer the loss, I will bear the pain, in order that you can remain a free man in the human community" But his loss was substantial. And lest this be misunderstood as the offer of cheap grace, we must be reminded that at the center of God's offer of pardon stands the cross of Christ...in the parable, the master is not repaid, he simply absorbs the loss. It is only through absorbing the pain of his loss that he is able to offer pardon to the debtor. Indeed, the forgiveness of great wrongs is never cheap but always painful, because someone must bear the loss" -Unconditional by Brian Zahnd...book on radical forgiveness

Timely, don't ya think.  If we do not learn to forgive, let go and move on, HURT and ANGER will clutter our lives.  It is not worth it, my friends.  We have more to do with our time and God has a better plan for our lives.

If we are harboring jealousy, we live our lives differently.  A friend reminded me just this past week that God made us, and every person around us different, for HIS perfect person.  To be jealous of someone else is to say to God, your design is not good enough.  I do not want to even go there, do you?  Remember that God is good, His plans are good and you are awesome just the way you are- push the clutter of jealously right out of your heart.

If we are harboring doubt, we live our lives differently.  Satan is the king of lies.  He uses anything, to include people and circumstances, to plant doubt in our lives.  Don't allow it!  Be strong in your thoughts, decisions and life choices.  They will all be more easily made if you do not allow the clutter of doubt to fill your heart.

Oh, my friends, there are so many others, but do you get the point?  When things like fear, and anger, and jealousy, and doubt clutter our heart,  we often do not have enough left to give.  Instead of giving our heart to others and to God, we are weighed down by the things of the world.

That's not where I want to be.  I want to love life and people and God!  I want them to know they are important.  I want them to see my heart and know how special they are to me.

Let's work to clear the clutter of our heart and allow it to be available to the things that are important!

OK, tomorrow, we are off to a lighter subject -  hope you will join us!!

Blessings,

Clearing Out the Clutter- Our Head

Welcome back to day two of our five day blog hop of Clearing Out the Clutter.  If you are just joining us, you can read about day one- Our Home!

Now that we have gotten started with our homes, you are still working right?, it is time to move onto the next place that I find myself cluttered- my head!

Please tell me it is not just me.  I walk into a room and cannot remember why I headed that way to begin with.  I go to the grocery store only to find my list and coupons are back at home.  I remember a friend's birthday the day before- and know the card will never get there on time.  I suddenly realize I have two appointments today, at the same time.  UGH!

The problem?

Too much clutter in my head.  (OK, maybe my age too, but let's not go there please!)

The problem?  Well, I think it is pretty obvious.  We waste time, waste money, let people down and walk around the house dazed and confused.  Or is that just me too?

The solution?  I think there are several- here goes...

A calendar/planner.  If you do not have one, now is the time to get one.  If you can mange on your electronic device with the calender there, my hat is off to you.  Go for it.  If you need things on paper in front of you (that's me screaming me me me!) then find one you like and keep it practically attached to you.  Oh, and do not forget to use it.  May seem like a silly thing to say, but let's face it, if you never write those appointments down, you will never make them.

Say things out loud!  Yes, it may make your kids look at you kind of funny, but for most people it will really help you remember things.  If I say out loud, going to the bedroom to get that list, them I am more likely to remember it.  I just pretend someone else is listening and cares where I am going. ;)

Make a to-do list and mark it off.  I love lists.  No comments from the peanut gallery please.  And yes, I am one of those people who will add things to my list that I already did just so I can check them off.  But here's the most important part.  Dump your brain onto that list each night before your head hits the pillow.  Once it is off your brain and onto your paper you are likely to rest better.  If nothing else at least you will not wake up and have forgotten what you wanted to do.  And a word from the one that has been there- if you have a great thought- write it down immediately.  I keep paper in random places and have even pulled the car over to write down a blog idea.  (see how much I love you all?)

Don't bite off more than you can chew.  I think I need to repeat that.  Don't bite off more than you can chew.  Preaching to the choir, huh?  Want to know why we can't remember a thing and our heads are spinning at top speeds.  We are fast paced people living in a fast paced world.  And we can't say no and we want to impress people with all the things we can do.  And then we fail miserably at half of it, because our heads are so filled clutter.

And one more thought about clutter.  Another one of our family's favorite sayings is Trash In, Trash Out.  If we clutter our heads with the trash this world so readily supplies we have far less space for the best that God has for us.  I challenge you and your family to strive to fill your heads with only the best and...

Clear out the clutter!

Tomorrow, lets move down from our heads to our hearts!

As for me- well, what else?

Welcome to 5 days of Clearing Out the Clutter.

Might as well write about something I am passionate about, right?  Passionate about, and always doing!  Each day this week we will take a look at an aspect of our life and see what we can do to-

Clear Out The Clutter!

Let's get started today with the place we all probably need to most help- the HOME!

Yep, we are going past just the cleaning and we are getting rid of things.  If you have not read my past posts about this kind of stuff, take a minute to check out our pantry,  kitchen,  bedroom, teen's room, kid's room, and  master closet posts.

Real quick- let's talk about the whys before we hit a few highlights of the hows.

Clutter collects dust.  Seriously, the more you have the more you have to clean and dust.  Dust collectors are bad for us all.  Just ask my allergic daughter.

Clutter becomes messy.  Real fast!  The more stuff we have the more things end up just sitting around, usually not in its right place.  (and collecting dust- see point above!)  Don't take my word for it- look at any child's room.  Or maybe your kitchen counter.  Or an entryway or two.  See- stuff!

Clutter costs money.  More than we care to admit.  Ask me how I know this.  We donated tons of stuff before our move here from Virginia.  When we arrived we took several more loads to Goodwill. Since moving into this smaller house a few weeks ago, we have sold furniture, given some away and taken four more loads ( read big loads) to Goodwill.  I cringe at the thought of how much money all of those things cost.   All that stuff, many nice things, but certainly all things we did not NEED, could have added up to a BIG savings instead.

Clutter adds to the chaos of our lives.  While I am not quite a minimalist (yet), I do see what motivates those people to be so.  When there are not four layers of STUFF sitting around, your life is simpler.  Quieter.  Less chaotic.  If you have to look in every closet to find your shoes, or every drawer to find your keys, I am willing to bet the rest of your life is chaotic too.

So today- here is what you need to do-

Clear the clutter in your home!
Room by room!
Day by day!
You CAN do it.

Start with your living room.  Got 10 do-dads sitting on the flat surfaces?  Try to take away 3.  How about be brave and try for 6!

Move on to the kitchen.  Do you really need all those plastic containers?  Why do you have 15 cooking utensils?  Can you get by with 5?  I thought I couldn't and then I realized I could not use them all at once anyway.  Do you?  Look through your pantry and fridge and throw out all the expired stuff you are hanging on to.  Get rid of a pot and a pan.  You can do it.

Bathrooms, here we come!  I know, this is a hard one, but we can do it!  Stashes of makeup?  Most old anyway.  Dump it out.  This is my makeup drawer.

I like makeup.  I wear it whenever I am going to be seen.  But there is only need for one of each product.  Drawers full are just taking up space. How about shampoo and soap and lotion and...on and on and on.  Get a container and put the extras in for your stock pile.  No problem.  But then throw the rest out and know your limit on buying.  If you have enough to last a year, you have enough!

Bedrooms are next.  Clothes and books are what gets us in this house.  How about yours?  Weed out the books you have read and donate them to the library or create a book swap with a friend.  While I am still struggling with reading on my iPad, it is a great way to not add to the clutter of your home. And clothes- simplify!  You can only wear one outfit at a time.  And in this day and time, most of us have a washer and dryer that can clean clothes pretty fast.  And shoes.  Yes, I am going there.  I like shoes too!  But do we really need 20 pairs?  Here is a challenge for you- go to your closet and count your shoes and then multiply by $30.00.  (yes, we are going to be really conservative here!)  How many weeks of groceries could you have bought with that money?  'nuff said and moving on.

The garage is next.  Let's not let the men in our lives off too easily.  ;)  This is an area we struggle with as well.  And, yes, I admit, it is not all my husband's fault.  We move.  A lot.  You never know when I might need that curtain rod.  Or shower curtain pole.  But, honestly if we kept everything we MIGHT need one day, our garage would runneth over.  Time to be harsh and move it out.  Your cars will appreciate you when you pull them in for the winter.

Closets.  If you are afraid to open them, they are too full.  If you cannot find anything in them, they are too full.  You only need two coats for each season (are you paying attention my dear family?)  And you do not wear five pairs of gloves at a time.  (still paying attention kiddos?)  How about excess towels and sheets?  Move them out!  You will not believe how great I feel when I open our linen closet and see two sets of sheets per bed and two sets of towels per person.  While one is being used, the other is being washed.  So really I see one. ;)

Laundry rooms and entries are our last stops for now.  In most houses these are pretty small places and for some reason the very places we try to stuff all of the leftovers.  This is not good. Don't do it. I do not love doing laundry so I need for that room to be as inviting as possible.  Go on, go in there and ask yourself what you need to do the laundry.  Then get rid of all the extras stashed there. Put those things where they belong or throw them away.  If you cannot find a proper home for something, chances are you do not need it to begin with.

There!  Feeling better?  OK, probably not yet because for most of us these projects are going to take some time.   Our homes did not get cluttered in a day and they are certainly not going to be decluttered in a day.  I would recommend turning on some fun music, find a friend who will challenge you to be bold and do one room a day.

Do you need it, love it and is it useful?  Yes- put it where it belongs and keep it.  No- let someone else have a go at it!

You can do this.  And your life will be made better.

Just by clearing out the clutter!

Join us tomorrow as we move from our home to our head.

Blessings,

Project Organize- Teen's Closet

I was going to post about my teen's closet when I did our closet post, but after seeing the mess, I told her she had earned a post all to her own.  (should have made her write it for punishment.) I did help you write it.
R's comments are in blue.

This child can be neat.  Really, she can. Here is the inside of her desk...
I really am an organized person...

But open her closet and you might think about running for your life.  She has a problem with clothes.  She has too many!

So first we pulled them all out and put them into neat piles on the bed. (They really are neat, you just can't tell.)

I also have a lot of scarves. We worked on that too.

boots!

See how clean the closet is?  Then we tried on, threw away, put in stacks for Goodwill, put wrong season stuff away and started over!  We also had a discussion about less is more, the value of saving money and on and on.
It's much easier to choose outfits now that I have less stuff. I don't stand at my closet every morning staring at my clothes, wondering what to wear. Less stuff, less decisions.

The final result-

see? isn't that lovely? and I've kept it clean since we cleaned it out.
I really am organized.

Happy mom, happy teen!

Next week- a peek under the sinks, in the cabinets and a chat about stuffed animals!
