Fighting for Freedom, One Book at a Time

Children's books intrigue me.  At one time I thought I would write them, but decided there were way more talented people out there that could better fill that need.  Two such people are Lynn and Jeff Yelton, authors of the newly released BUCK the CHUCK series.

Husband and wife team Lynn and Jeff feel strongly about freedom and the the system the founding fathers of America set up to provide and protect that freedom.  In an attempt to convey those concepts in a simple format to children, they created an unlikely hero, BUCK the woodchuck.  In BUCK the CHUCK- Thre Fight for Freedom, BUCK, along with his friend Thor the guardian pig, take on the BoozleBoops of swampy forest who want to take over Chucksville.  While Chucksville is a place of many colors and freedoms, the swampy forest is simply black and white, having given up their freedom for the promise of something better. They are now on a mission to take away everyone else's freedoms too.

This fun picture book is a delight to read, especially for kids who love all things animals.  The characters are endearing and comical.  A combination of narrative and conversational style, the story often reads like a comic book, taking quick pauses from the narration to hear what the characters are saying to each other.  While written for children, I would recommend it for a slightly older elementary to middle school age, as the pages are quite wordy at times, and well, let's face it- freedom is a difficult subject.

Lynn and Jeff use color, or the lack of it, to help describe freedom and what can happen when someone takes it away from us.  About half way through reading it, a light went off in my 12 year old's brain and he said, "Oh. I get it!"  After that he giggled his way through 'til the end and declared BUCK "pretty cool."

BUCK the CHUCK helps kids answer the questions-

  • What is Freedom?
  • How do we lose it?
  • Can we get it back?
Good news for BUCK the CHUCK fans, a second book in the series BUCK the CHUCK- Let Freedom Sing,  is scheduled to be published in  Spring/Summer of 2020!

Looking for a few new books to add to your library?  Check out the BUCK the CHUCK series.  YOu may find your child has a new hero in their life.

The Reason for God- A Review

I love the learning and the information that comes from books.  Oftentimes, you can be inspired or simply find nuggets of truth in the pages.  Which explains why many of my books contain highlighted passage after highlighted passage.  I believe well loved books look just like that- well loved.  Covers worn, pages turned down, and typeset often smeared.  I also believe that The Reason for God by Timothy Keller will become one of those books on my shelf.

I have been reading this book for weeks now.  Yep, it has taken me that long to get through the 251 pages.  Usually I am a fast reader, but this book, and the information it contained, made me slow down, sometimes re-read, and then ponder what was being said.

Timothy Keller is a pastor and the founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City.  It was there, while starting his church, that he ran into person after person who were not only asking questions about Christianity, but seriously seeking the answers.   In helping them find answers to all that they questioned, the book The Reason for God was birthed.  In it, Keller explores many of the questions he was asked on a daily basis, using not only the Bible as the ultimate source, but literature, philosophy, historical documents, and reasoning as well.

What you will find among the pages is a detailed, and well thought out argument for Christianity.  Well, not an argument really.  But a calm conversation between reader and author.  And THAT is one of the reasons I like this book.  Keller is not trying to pick a fight or be the winner of an argument.  He very calmly addresses each issue in what feels like an intimate conversation with the reader.  Yes, he wants you to come away with a new, or deeper, faith, but he wants you to do so because you were compelled to consider the facts.  I understand, of course, that there are varying beliefs of how one becomes a believer, but the basic facts in this book I think are valid across the board.

To break it down for you a bit, the first half of the book ponders the reasons many have for no faith.

  • There Can't be Just One True Religion
  • How Can a Good God Allow Suffering
  • Christianity is a Straitjacket
  • The Church is Responsible for so Much Injustice
  • How Can a Loving God Send People to Hell
  • Science has Disproved Christianity
  • You Can't Take the Bible Literally

In the second half of the book, Keller sets out to explain the reasons FOR faith.

  • The Clues of God
  • The Knowledge o God
  • The Problem of Sin
  • Religion and the Gospel
  • The (True) Story of the Cross
  • Te Reality of the Resurrection
  • The Dance of God

In his final chapter, Where do we Go From Here? Keller addresses what it means to put your faith in Christ.

I find it rather ironic that I decided to review this book for Timberdoodle Co. when I saw it listed in their catalog as a resource for high schoolers.  It is actually part of their 12th grade curriculum kit.  I had simply hoped it would be a good addition to my senior's Bible reading list.  It it for sure, but I also would highly recommend it to so many others!

Maybe you know someone who has questions about Christianity.  Maybe you do.  Grab a copy of this book and soak in the truths.  I think if you go in with eyes wide open, you may just come out the other side with a heart wide open as well!

Blessings,

Marriage After God- Review

Let me just start by saying it has been a privilege to be a part of the book launch for the newly released, TODAY, book, Marriage After God, Chasing Boldly After God's Purpose for Your Life Together by Aaron and Jennifer Smith!  As Bloggers at their sites UnveiledWife.com and HusbandRevolution.com, Aaron and Jennifer have been spreading encouragement through the Word of God and their own lives to thousands of people for years.  As authors of books like 31 Prayers for My Future Husband and Husband After God, they are already well known in the world of husbands and wives and how to better those relationships.

This new book is different though.  It is not a marriage-help book.  It is a God- help book!  And a great one at that!

Marriage After God tackles looking at marriages through God's eyes and seeing the purpose He created for them.  It is about building your marriage in such a way that it can be used to glorify God and do HIS work!

"Your marriage is God's, and He desires for it to be done His way and for His purposes."

Yes, that has to start within the walls of your house, but it certainly should never stop there.  Aaron and Jennifer explore how to build your marriage, see where your strengths lay, and then learn to dream together and chase God together!

In 16 chapters broken into 5 parts they discuss-
  • What is a Marriage After God? The Definition
  • Building a Strong Foundation: The Preparation
  • What's in Your Tool Belt: The Equipment
  • Dreaming Together: The Application
  • Your Marriage for God's Purposes: The Impact

Each chapter is followed by questions for reflection for you and your spouse to discuss.  In addition, throughout the reading they will often ask you to stop and think about a few questions as they challenge you with information.  One of my favorite parts of the book though are the dreaming together converstaion starters at the end of the book!  They are a perfect way for you and your spouse to begin to explore what the Lord may have for you and your marriage on mission for him.  Make a copy of them and head out on a date night, or a few, to discuss and pray over them.

As always, the foundation of the Smith's book, Marriage After God is God's Word!  Scripture is quoted throughout and is the backbone to all of their thoughts and ideas.

How refreshing to read a book that isn't just a name it, claim it self help marriage book, but instead one that reminds us of the gift of marriage and the responsibility that comes with that gift!  How challenging it is to know that God can and will use our marriages to bring honor and glory to Him if we will just allow Him to!  Howchallenging it is to look closely at our own marriages to determine how God is going to use US!

Will you allow Him to use you to glorify Him?

I challenge you to grab a copy of  Marriage After God, Chasing Boldly After God's Purpose for Your Life Together and get started!

Blessings,

Learning History Through A Story

This is certainly not our first review of a book from YWAM Publishing, but Colby said Heroes of History: Douglas MacArthur- What Greater Honor was by far one of his favorite Heroes of History books!  That's a pretty big statement coming from a boy who owns over 20 of the Heroes of History and Heroes of Faith series.

YWAM has been publishing books for a while now and adds a few new titles each year to the collection.  Because my family consists of a bunch of history loving, book-reading people, we seem to gravitate towards these naturally.  Written as historical fiction, the Heroes of Faith and Heroes of History books tell the story of a famous person who has shaped history and our faith.  Intended to be read by ages 10 and up, these books are rich with factual historic details, but have added a engaging story line to capture younger audiences' attention.  From birth to death, the story of these amazing people, from George Washington to Billy Graham and the Wright Brothers, introduces kids to important people with fun facts and exciting adventures.

Also available to help further your studies are Downloadable Study Guides.  These guides include vocabulary, in depth questions for each chapter, and a biography of the featured person.  You will also find creative writing prompts, arts and craft ideas, essay questions, and even audio visual project ideas.  There is a social studies section that has field trip ideas, vocabulary and maps.  A resource section gives many more book titles for you to use if you want to further your study of the subject.  These study guides are perfect for unit studies for homeschooling families or just to help your child with reading comprehension.  The books in the series are also great read-aloud books for your family and can be enjoyed by older readers as well.

When we are in the thick of our school year, I use these books and the corresponding study guides as Colby's reading and vocabulary (Colby is our 6th grader).  Because we are winding down our school year, I allowed him to read this one at his own pace, about 30 minutes a day.  He has already decided that he wants to read the Louis Zamperini book next!  For the record, my 17 year old is currently reading the Jacob DeShazer title.  I told 'ya this is good stuff!

Even if you choose not to use the study guide to its fullest, I highly recommend you print out the fact sheet.  This is a great way to encourage your child to read for details.

We also love using the maps to label!  Not only are they great geography reviews, but they help bring the books to life.

The timeline provided does the same thing, and put all together, they can make a neat little keepsake.

Colby does want to tell you about his favorite parts of the book-

"Douglas MacArthur was a 5 Star General who was famous for fighting in World War I and World War II as well as the Korean War.  Kind of like our family, his family moved every few years when he was a child.  One of the neat things he did was help Japan a lot.  He helped women there gain the right to vote and they all liked him a lot.  The thing I like about MacArthur was that when he was outnumbered in battles, he never gave up.  I think that is one reason he is a hero.  I like reading stories about people in History because I am a history buff and this one is my favorite so far because it is about war and I like war facts!"

Boys!  Go figure!

YWAM Publishing has definitely won a place in our hearts with their Heroes of Faith and Heroes of History series.  They are a treasured group of books on our bookshelves and great, wholesome family reading.  Now, to choose our next one!

God's Smuggler

Reading is always a favorite pastime in my house, but in the summer we really up our reading time.  What better way to beat the heat while learning and letting our imaginations soar?  The biggest challenge for me is to find books that are interesting enough to hold my 10 year old's attention. He reads at a higher level than he is age-wise, so finding subject matter that he is interested in that also fits his maturity AND reading level can get tricky.

When we were contacted about reviewing God's Smuggler, Young Reader's Edition by Brother Andrew, I knew we had found a gem for our collection.  This classic book, one that has sold over 10 million copies, is now abridged for younger readers. Written for 9-12 year olds, this 219 page soft-back book about a true hero of faith will inspire your kids with Brother Andrew's many adventures.

For those of you unfamiliar with the story, Brother Andrew grew up in the Netherlands around the time that Germany was sweeping the countryside.  He served in the war until a leg injury sidelined him.  During his struggle to heal physically and emotionally from the war wounds, he had a come-to-faith conversion.  At that time he dedicated his life to Jesus and eventually found himself serving believers behind the iron curtain.  By smuggling Bibles into areas that were not open to the gospel, he gave people the hope they were in such great need of. Now, at age 89, Brother Andrew no longer travels, but his work continues throughout the world through his ministry, Open Doors.

I had all intentions of my having my 10 year old son read this book independently.  So much for those plans!  To get him interested, I agreed to read the first chapter with him.  We were BOTH hooked.  Since then, we have been taking turns reading a chapter to each other, making it part of our afternoon quiet time together.  He is more than capable of reading and understanding it on his own but we have enjoyed the time together.  Simple pen and ink drawings every few pages help hold a young reader's attention as well.

There are some sensitive issues, such a war and drinking, discussed, but I believe it is done in as much of a family-friendly way as possible.  Reading the book together has provided us the opportunity to talk about our beliefs and feelings on the subjects.  A few names are hard to pronounce due to the fact they are names we are not familiar with, but we did our best not to butcher them.  I did have to stop a few times to explain what a word he was not familiar with meant, but it did not slow us down nor deter him from reading.

When I asked my son what he liked most about the book, here is what he said-

"I like that the book is adventurous.  He had a lot of adventures when he was young AND old.  It made me laugh when he stopped up his neighbor's chimney by putting a glass window over the opening.  I also liked it when he set off firecrackers to scare soldiers.  I think Brother Andrew was pretty brave.  He worked hard for God!"

In this day and time when true heroes are often a bit harder to find, I love that I have found the book God's Smuggler to show my son what a true hero of faith looks like. I think you will enjoy it as well!

The Secret Bridge- Homeschool Review Crew Book Review

Books arrive at my door sometimes even weekly, but when a leather tone, beautifully embossed hardback arrives, everyone in the house takes notice.  And then fights over who gets to read it first.  Trust me, it is a real problem in this house.  So yes, when the The Secret Bridge by Lamplighter Publishing arrived, it was quickly whisked off.  My 15 year old got to it first.

I will tell you why.  In addition to the really cool look of the book cover, he recognized the name Lamplighter!  We have more than a few of their audio books and they are some of our favorites, often finding their way to our car on our frequent trips.  Lamplighter's aim is to produce "Christlike character one story at a time."

I love that!  We read a lot of books around here, and let's face it, not all books are created equal.  Although we read quite a variety of books, I do prefer that what we read be wholesome and uplifting.  Have you looked at the teen or even family section of your local bookstore lately?  They are filled with a bunch of sub-standard literature, in my opinion.  It is so hard to find anything suitable for our kids, especially the teens.  To know that a publisher like Lamplighter is actually purposing to infuse their stories with Godly character traits, Biblical references, and wholesome content is a win for me.  Just a quick perusal of their website will win you over.

So on to the book-

Overview-
The original book was written in 1899 by Amy Le Feuvre.  Recommended for ages 12 and up, this  272 page story begins as Bridget Channing sets sail upon a ship to England to join her uncle after losing her parents.  On the ship she meets fellow passenger Godfrey Bullingham.  He is kind, a favorite among the other passengers, and immediately takes an interest in Bridget.  Upon arrival and hearing the news that her uncle has died, Bridget again runs into Godfrey and quickly realizes she has no one else to turn to for help.  Although his offer of marriage takes Bridget by surprise, she recognizes it is the best course of action.  After the quick marriage and departure of her new husband, Bridget soon realizes there is a family feud to be dealt with.  Through many ups and downs, Bridget begins to explore scripture and her faith grows, waiting for her bridegroom as we as believers wait for Christ as our bridegroom.

Our thoughts-
This really is a lovely book.  While it was a slow start for my son, age 15, once he got into it he was intrigued by the multiple plot twists.  He did say that the older style of writing was occasionally a bit hard to follow and seemed to slow him down a little, but he does feel that it is appropriate reading for middle and high schoolers.  He liked that the content is clearly Christian without having a "preachy" (his words) tone.  I like that, for kids, there are footnotes included for any lesser known words, loquacious, for example, as well as scripture references. Now that I have rescued the book from his room, I am looking forward to being the next in line to read it!

This is our first Lamplighter Publishing book, but it will most definitely not be our last.  We are looking forward to adding more of these beautiful books to our collection!

Florida's Treasure Coast Homeschool Reivew Crew Review- and Our Upcoming Trip!

It is always an honor to review for stellar homeschooling companies, but sometimes it is also just a lot of fun.  Amazingly, it also seems to be perfect timing in many cases, based on our needs or life circumstances.

That is exactly what happened when we heard about our most recent review from By the Way Book Series.

You see, we are headed to Florida in a few weeks for our yearly family vacation and guess what?  One of By the Way Book Series is...wait for it... Florida's Treasure Coast- Here We Come.

Seriously?!  Could it have been more perfect timing?!

Our family had the privilege of living in Florida years ago and we have been to Disney a few times, but otherwise our youngest has not had much time in or knowledge of this magical state.  At his age, (4th grade) it is not in our current curriculum to do specific state studies, so this book is not only a great tie-in to our trip, helping get us all excited about the things we could see and do, but also a good resource for a state study!

About the book-  In Florida's Treasure Coast- Here We Come, author Joy Budensiek tells the story of two children, siblings Alex and Lexi, as they join their grandparents in Florida for a much needed vacation from the cold temperatures where they live.  From the minute they step off the plane to the minute they go home, Alex and Lexi get to experience the beauty of Florida.  They learn about the tress, the animals, the history and more, shown to them through a Biblical Worldview.  While conversational and engaging, the story is like a history, science, Bible, and geography lesson all rolled into one.  When a new subject is introduced in the story, there is always a separate fact area on the corresponding page labeled Did You Know?  In those sections, you will find additional facts on the subject.  For example- technically, a palm tree has no branches, mosquitoes have 47 teeth, and only one side of a whale's brain sleeps at a time.  Who knew?

What we liked- ALL of it!  It is not often that you can find a book, fiction or non fiction, that is written from a Biblical worldview.  Joy does an amazing job of this and her obvious love for the Lord and His creation shines through.  Illustrated by Stephanie Robledo, the pictures are fun and engaging and will hold the attention of even the younger kids in your life.

There is a lot of information packed into this 48 page hardback book!  Because of that, I think you would find it challenging to read in one sitting if you used it as a read aloud.  My 9 year old (4th grader) did read it in one sitting but it took him a while and he was highly motivated considering our upcoming trip.  Since then, he picks up the book often and just flips to a few pages he wants to look at or read again. This is often what I find at bedtime!

Places we now want to visit in Florida-  Everywhere!  But not like you would think.  Unlike your usual tourist brochure, the By the Way Book Series is not a specific destination book.  Instead, the intent is to focus on God's creation!  I love that Scripture is quoted throughout the book and the characters continually praise God for what they see.  It is refreshing and encouraging.

If you are interested, there are currently several other books in this series with many more to come!  We have already chosen the next one we want to own- Colorado-By the Way!  Colorado is another state we have lived in and it holds a special place in our heart, so we look forward to adding this one to our library!  New York City is also on the upcoming list, and I know someone that will be perfect for!

Where Jesus Slept- Children's Christmas Book Review and Giveaway

We love books and we love Christmas, so the chance to review a new Christmas book- score!  Each year we try to add to our collection that we pull out December 1st.  I love snuggling by the tree in the evenings together reading Christmas classics as well as newer books we have collected through the years.  As the children get older we read together less frequently, but seeing the Christmas book basket grow still makes my heart sing- it will be waiting for grandchildren some day!

This year's new book is Where Jesus Slept, by Norma Lewis, author of ten additional books. This large, 32 page book written for 4-7 year olds is sure to delight!

“This is the bed where Jesus slept. This is the straw that lined the bed where Jesus slept,” begins this sweet story about the birth of Jesus.  From there each page adds a new element to the story- from the cow, stable, Mary, child, angel, and lamb, to the shepherd, star, wise men, and gifts.  By repeating each previous line, the author uses rhyme and rhythm to capture children's attention while telling the Christmas story of Jesus' birth.

And the illustrations!  Wow!  This is the second children's book we own that has been illustrated by Katy Hudson, and we just love her.  Her bright colors and sweet drawings are just pretty to look at, and I think the vivid colors are just beautiful.  If it bothers you, please be forewarned that baby Jesus is pretty fair skinned, as are several of the other characters, and the angels are portrayed with wings.

I will say that even though my son is several years older than the intended range for this book, he really has enjoyed reading it several times and is excited to add it to our basket.  When I asked him why he liked it so much he said he liked all of the rhyming words.  You never know what is going to capture a child's attention, right?

Thanks to Fly By Productions, we are able to offer one of our readers this fun holiday book!  As always, just leave me a comment and a way to get a hold of you and we will select a random winner next Thursday!

Parenting- 14 Principles for Gospel Parenting- Book Review & Giveaway!

I have done some pretty hard things in my life.  But I must admit, parenting is by far the hardest. Parenting four- well, even harder.

Our littlest blessing
Each of our four kiddos are so very different.  We have a typical first born- very deep and introspective, type A, perfectionist.  Then we have our second daughter- a people pleaser, laid back, easy personality who loves almost everyone.  Then we have our two boys.  The first has been pretty easy to raise, sweet spirited and has a happy, even-keel look at life.  Our youngest is our challenge- loving and very loved, but passionate and hot tempered to a fault sometimes.

What worked for one does not work for the other.  Just when we felt like had the parenting thing mastered, God would throw us another curveball.  I mean blessing.

Each time we would regroup, read another best-selling book, and change our style to fit that particular child.

It is exhausting at times.  Ok, exhausting a lot!

But some things never change.

Like the Word of God and His desires for us and our children.  And the Gospel story.  The only magic formula or best selling book for parenting is His Word.  I am convinced of this!

So what does Mr. Paul David Tripp, Christian author and speaker, offer to parents looking for answers in his new book,  Parenting- 14 Godly Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family?

This is not a typical how-to parenting book.  It is a "why do we" parenting book.  While at times I just want someone to tell me what to do (you know- make it easy for me), this book points back to Jesus and the whys of what I need to do.  It is challenging and convicting, and it points back to our need for God in everything it says.  It points back to the Gospel time and time again. A refreshing read for sure!

Chapters include:
  • Calling
  • Grace
  • Law
  • Inability
  • Identity
  • Process
  • Lost
  • Authority
  • Foolishness
  • Character
  • False Gods
  • Control
  • Rest
  • Mercy

Let me share a few take aways that I have been pondering since reading this book.

In the chapter on Calling, one of the questions Mr. Tripp asks is, "Do ministry decisions and commitments make it hard for you to faithfully do your work as a parent?"  Ouch!  Whether ministry or just commitments in general, I KNOW we must choose carefully where we spend our time.  We can get so busy doing good things, that we forget to do the best things.  It is a challenge I want to be very aware of!

The Inability chapter was another convicting one for me.  Listen to this- "God has given you authority for the work of change, but has not granted you the power to make that change happen." (p.61)  I love how Mr. Tripp reminds his readers that we can scare or reward our children into right behavior temporarily, but only God can truly change their hearts.  As silly as it sounds, it takes a little pressure off me.  I know that until a child's, or my, heart is changed into God's image, our behavior will never change.  We are just not able on our own.

From the reminders that our children misbehave because they are lost, foolish, and lack character, to the hope that they will change with God's grace, each page of this 209 page book is filled with Godly insight and encouragement.  I appreciate Mr. Tripp's honesty in his own failings as a parent and his honest questions to get you thinking about how you view your parenting and how you could improve.

If you are looking to make changes in your parenting and want to make the Gospel the center of your life and your child's, Parenting- 14 Godly Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family is a book you need in your hands!

Fly By Productions has graciously agreed to give one of our readers a copy of  Parenting- 14 Godly Principles That Can Radically Change Your Family.  Just leave me a comment and tell me how many kiddos you have and a random winner will be chosen next Thursday!

The Legend of the Easter Robin, Review and Giveaway

As always, it is a joy to review for FlyBy Productions!  I love how they team up with the best of the best in Christian publishers and once again, I was not disappointed in this new product!

The Legend of the Easter Robin is a sweet tale about a little girl named Tressa and her Grandmother, who are patiently watching a robin redbreast tend to her nest outside their window.  While waiting, the grandmother tells Tressa the legend of how the robin got his red breast.  Weaving Pennsylvania Dutch tradition of egg coloring, the colors of a robin, and the Biblical account of Easter, Tressa learns about the sacrifice that Jesus made for her.

This 32 page hardback book, written for ages 4-8, may look like just another Easter story, but I found it to have much more of a lesson - that God takes cares of His creatures.  Humans included.
The grandmother's tale is one of the Easter story, but from a bird's point of view.  Yes, it is obviously not scripture perfect, but the book makes it clear that the story about how the robin's breast turned red it is a legend.  What I love about this book is that at the end there is a page dedicated to pointing out traditions and symbols that can be used to strengthen our faith and help us to remember the Easter story.

Another neat aspect of this book is that the fictional story is told with beautifully illustrated pictures by artist Richard Cowdrey, and the pictures turn to black and white when depicting the Easter story from the Bible.  I love how this visually helps children see the difference between the two parts.

While my son is right at the outer edge of the recommended ages, he thoroughly enjoyed this book and it is one we will add to our collection to be read for years to come.

If you would like a chance to win a copy of this book to add to your collection, please leave your name and a way I can reach you and a random winner will be chosen next Friday!

What Motivates Your Child?- Book Review

Have you noticed that some stages of parenting are easier than others?  I mean, I know that they all have their challenges, but really, I have found that some stages are just harder for me than others.   Like the one I am in now.  You know - the "yes, I want to do that, no, I do not want to do that, you are not nice, I am running away tomorrow, I do not like you, I am not listening to you, no, the sky is not blue, it is red and green polka dot" stage.  Anyone else there?

OK, it may not be that bad everyday, but we are getting close.  Add to that a strong-willed, spicy, adopted child with a Latino personality whose dad is currently deployed, and let's just say I am being challenged.  A lot.  And I feel like I am at a breaking point.  His AND mine!

So, when the opportunity arose to be a part of the book launch team for Motivate Your Child, A Christian Parent's Guide to Raising Kids Who Do What They Need to Do Without Being Told, I may just have begged to be a part of it.  Ok, I begged. Thank you National Center for Biblical Parenting!

Written by Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, Motivate Your Child is 254 pages of parenting wisdom.  Based on scriptural doctrine and years of experience between the authors, it focuses on the concept of internal motivation.  Part 1 discusses the Moral Development in Children and Part 2 discusses Spiritual Development in Children.  21 chapters are packed with discussions, ideas, and sound advice.

What motivates my child?  Right now, I am pretty sure it is NOT internally generated.  Both in the younger child and olders alike at times.  Everyone is good at doing what they are asked to do.  Well, most everyone.  But Dr. Turansky and Mrs. Miller contend that a parent's objective should be to teach a child to recognize needs on their own and be internally motivated to react. Not to simply obey when told or asked.  Mom and dad will not always be around to tell them what to do, when to do it, or how to do it.  They need to be able to get to those things on their own eventually.

This is where the Holy Spirit, scripture, a good plan, and even a guilty conscious come into play. Yes, even a guilty conscious is a good thing sometimes.

One of the things I love about Motivate Your Child is that it is full of real life examples and the recommended solution.  Not just a "you should do this" solution, but a very specific "this is how you can word it" solution.  Complete with Biblical examples.  I am a detail person.  This book gives the details I need.

I am willing to bet you will like the details as well.

Let me give you an example.  One of the things the authors discuss is what to do after a child has done something wrong.  Trust me, I perked up my ears quickly because I have one that likes to throw out a quick "I am sorry, do you forgive me?" and then think all is well with the world.  Instead, the authors recommend working through the following with your child after an offense-

-Confession - what did I do wrong?
-Getting to the heart - why was that wrong?
-Developing a plan for next time - what am I going to do differently next time?

Consider this-

"Repentance isn't just stopping something.  It's a 180-degree turn, choosing to do something right instead." -page 69

YES!  That is what I have been trying to say, but not as well.  I want my child to not only know what he or she did wrong and not do it again, but why they should not do it again!  And how to not do it again.

Have we perfected it?  Not by a long shot.  Remember, strong-willed, yada, yada, yada.

But we are working on it.

"When a child acts out and does the wrong thing, it's because emotions or desires become stronger than convictions and character.  All these things are in the heart.  Much of the work of parenting is identifying what heart quality needs development and then practicing it to increase internal strength." -page 56

So that's where we land right now.  Heart parenting.  A whole lot of practicing, but at least I feel like things are not hopeless.  I feel better equipped.

And I hope that you, too, will feel better equipped as a parent after reading Motivating Your Child! Yesterday was the official release day and already the book is leaping to the top of the charts. For good reason!  If you order by the end of the month you can still take advantage of the FREE resources being offered.  You can also enter our amazing team giveaway for your chance to win a Go Pro camera and more.  Today is the last day, so don't wait on that one!

Whether you are a new parent just starting out or one with teens AND toddlers in tow, Motivate Your Child is a book you need on your shelf.  I highly recommend it!

If He Had Not Come- TOS Review

It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas...
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...
Away in a manger no room for a bed...

Excited yet?  I am getting there.  We LOVE Christmas time in this house.  Baking, buying gifts for friends, homemade crafts- traditions that we began years ago and look forward to every year.  One of our favorite traditions is reading special Christmas books each night.  So when we had the opportunity to add If He Had Not Come to our ever growing collection, we were thrilled!
Christmas Book Review
If He Had Not Come, a tale written by Nan Weeks many years ago, and reintroduced to the world by David Nicholson, is a story told through the eyes of a young boy who imagines the world without Jesus.  The story captured David's heart when he heard it in Sunday School and it was then that he vowed to read it to his family every year at Christmas time.  That vow later resulted in the publication of this beautifully illustrated, stunning tale of what the world might possibly look like if Jesus has never come.
This is not your ordinary cheery, presents and snow kind of Christmas story.  Because of the serious subject matter it is best intended for ages 6 and up. As young boy named Bobby prepares for Christmas morning he and his father end their evening by reading the Bible.  As he drifts to sleep the words of John 15:22 echo in his mind and he goes to sleep dreaming...

What would the world be like if Jesus had not come?  It is here in the story that the bright illustrations dim and the story takes a rather sad turn...

Bobby sees no evidence of Christmas celebrations.  No trees, no wreathes, no presents.
As he ventures outside, no one he meets even knows what the word "Christmas" means.  Throughout the town young Bobby finds everyday places and people gone, replaced by the words If He Had not Come.

The most poignant of all is when he returns home and looks in his Bible and the entire New Testament is replaced with those words instead.

Bobby then wakes up, the illustrations become vivid again and he thanks Jesus for coming to the world and vows to do what he can to please Him.

What we thought -
I have to tell you that I liked this book a lot the minute I read it, but was not sure how my children would feel about it.  Especially the youngest, age 7.  I read it to him and since then he has reread it on his own over and over again!  The first few days we had it, it was in his hands constantly and I could find him curled up in a chair with it.  When I asked him why he liked it so much he said, "I like all of the pictures of the boy."  It is funny how some books just capture you and If He Had Not Come seems to be one of those books.  This is a book that may not be your typical holly jolly Christmas books, but it is one that will fill you and your family with hope and thankfulness.

One of the bonuses for this book are the Interactive Topics in the back for families and teachers alike.  These topics and questions are a great jump start for conversations after you read the book together.  Some questions are scripture based questions and some are merely what would you do or what do you think questions.  I liked that because there was a little something there for all age groups to ponder.    My favorite question- "What other things would be good to think about on Christmas morning along with  presents?"

The ABCs of the Gospel message are also clearly laid out for anyone who has not been exposed to them and for anyone who would like to receive Jesus as their Savior!  What a beautiful and appropriate way to end a book with such an important message.

Our lives would be so different if Jesus had not come.  I pray you and your family have experienced that truth and His love!

If He Had Not Come can be purchased for $18.95.
