From House to HOME!

I firmly believe that people are what makes a house a home.  Any house can provide four walls and shelter, but until you put people in it who love, laugh, and live there, it is simply that- a shelter.

We want this house to be a home.  Not just for us, but for all who walk through our doors, whether for just a few minutes or for days.  We want people to feel welcome and loved.  Because they are!

Aside from a few boxes in the library/office and the garage (let's not talk about that yet) we are unpacked and settled!

We are HOME!

And we have a calendar packed with names of people coming to visit already.  It is so exciting.  There are rooms ready and plenty of space and it makes me grin from ear to ear.

So for a quick tour- minus the library which is still a work in progress and will get its own post and the boys room, well, because...boys!

I tried to take the after picture from the same viewpoint as our before, but bear with me regardless- I do not claim to be a photographer.

This is the Master Bedroom. It is on the main floor, which makes me very happy.  I was going to get rid of the yellow paint, but it is growing on me so it may stay for a while.

This is the view from our kitchen eat in area to the living room.  The chandelier is lovely, but not our style so we will try to sell it and replace it at some point.  It's on the to-do list!

If you are sitting on the leather couch, this would be your view with the kitchen to the right.

This is our basement family room.  Currently on Sundays, it is filled with young adults having coffee, sharing food, playing games, and lots of laughter.  Makes my heart so happy that they feel welcome here.

And the view from sitting on the couches.

On the top floor is the boys' loft- also where their bedrooms are.  We pray it will be a great space for pre-teen and teen gatherings as well. The couch is also a pull out bed for kids to use.

Just a quick kitchen view.  The jury is still out as to how I feel about open cabinets.  In theory, I love them, but I am not convinced the visual clutter won't get to me in a few months.  Time will tell.

Yes, our hall bath was lavender.  Not sure why as it did not go with anything else in the house, but Ashton fixed it quickly for me and a sweet friend gave us the mirror!

The dining room- also where the boys and I do some school, so yes, the sideboard is full of current school supplies and curriculum.

And last but not least- YOUR room.  We do have a room currently being used as a workout room and sewing space for Ashton that will eventually be a guest room as well.  Baby steps...

A quick peak at the girl's rooms-

Our new family mantra is LOVE GOD, LOVE PEOPLE!  (I need a sign, Jennisa!) Pray for us to do that well!

And make your reservation soon! ;)  Your room is waiting.

So is the front porch!

Living Deliberately

With 2018 here (yes I am a few days behind) there are a few things I have decided to be more purposeful about.  Let's don't go crazy and call them New Year's Resolutions, but really, they are things I want to see growth or change in.

Here's hoping!

Date Nights- This is the first thing I am working on!  Seriously, gotta put that husband first sometimes. ;)   We are not even what I would consider busy people, but it seems that other things just slide into the slots and we get the leftovers of each other sometimes.  Trust me when I say the left overs of me after a crazy day of schooling are not very pretty folks!  My goal is to put ourselves on the calendar at least twice a month for a few hours out alone.  We do not even require babysitters any more, so honestly this should not be that hard.  It's all in the planning.

Exercise and Health- If you have been here long enough, you know my health has been questionable for a while now.  In the quest to find the problem, doctors found a gall stone and I had my gall bladder out in May.  While I no longer have THAT particular pain, the surgery gave me a host of other issues I am still dealing with.  It is burdensome and tiring and I have had enough already!  I am still tweaking things in my diet and such but had put exercise on hold because I have felt so poorly.  Enough of that!  I am getting my backside busy again if it is the last thing I do.  Someone hold me accountable!

Leisure reading- I read A LOT!  But mostly they are books on parenting and such, or curriculum or books for review.  This year I want to be a little selfish and read at least one book a month just for me.  Simple, mindless, sweet books.  Historical fiction.  Mysteries. Whatever.  Feel free to shoot me your recommendations!

Making memories with my sons-  I feel like I have fallen down on this a bit lately.  With the girls it was easier.  I was younger (think NOT tired) and let's face it I have more in common with them because well, they are girls!  But I do not want my boys to miss out on mom moments just because I am old and - a GIRL!  I am making specific plans with my boys for some fun at least once a month.  Again, it is all a matter of scheduling!

Simplifying life- In our 34 Weeks of Clean quest, we have simplified MUCH in our lives.  Layers of stuff are gone and it feels good.  It also motivates me to do more, especially with the possibility of another move in our future.  But it is not just stuff I want to simplify,  it is life in general.  I want to concentrate on what really matters and set aside the rest.  Take note, SOCIAL MEDIA is the first on my list!

Time with friends- This is an area that homeschool mommas seem to struggle with. (or is it just me?)  Lunch dates are hard to fit in the middle of our school days and by the time we are done, late afternoon coffees often require more than I have to give.  I am working on a plan to shorten my Fridays and dedicate some time to friends.  I am also determined to get over this crazy fear of flying and hop on a plane to a see a few friends.  Watch out ladies, I may land on your door step!

More time in the Word- This should have come first of course, but I saved the best for last.  While I attend a Bible study and we do devotions nightly as a family, time in the Word with just me and God often gets lost in the busyness of my day.  I am determined to get back to that time in the morning before I even step foot out of bed.  What a better thing to wake up and start your day with!

Oh, friends, I may be adding as I go, but this is where I will start!  Whether you choose to make resolutions or just want to make some positive changes in your life, I pray 2018 will be a year of great strides in a positive direction for you and one filled with love, laughter, hope and joy!

One filled with GOD!

Blogging On

Welcome friends!  As you may have noticed by now, Family, Faith and Fridays is a conglomerate of subjects- from homeschooling, to reviews, to modesty, meal plans and raising kids, to random thoughts from my head.

Some call it a Lifestyle Blog.

Some just call it craziness and are along for the ride.

Either way, I am glad you are here and I appreciate that you stick with us.

Gotta be honest here for a minute.  When I began blogging several years ago I wrote every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  Every. Single. One.  I must have had a lot to say I guess.  Then as my kids got older, I found myself with less spare time to write and with less to write as life, well, things that just were not public knowledge to protect the privacy of growing and maturing young adults.

But, quite frankly, it put me into a panic when I skipped a day because I was afraid I would lose my readership.

And maybe I did some days.

My intention was never to make money off this blog (I do not) or be a power blogger (I am not).  My intentions were to share my heart, help homeschooling mommas like me, and occasionally inspire or relate to some of you.

When you are the writer behind a blog it is hard to measure those things.  Is success a number?  Is it how many people viewed your blog in any given day or how many followers you have or even how many people leave comments?

The jury is still out on that!

Recently, I have contemplated shutting this blog down for various reasons.

BUT...

Then I put up a post like Refined, and I stop in my tracks.

There are people out there still reading this blog.  And they are people just like me that need a little encouragement and need to know they are not alone.

Know how I know that?  For every comment you see on my posts on our FB page, I received twice that many in my personal email or messages.  People who reach out with a simple thanks or personal story and remind me that we all need cheerleaders in our lives.

So for now, I am sticking around!  After all, I have some cheering to do!

Truth or Trite

Ever wonder what the difference is between the two?

It has been weighing on me for months and this post has been in the works for almost as long.  I may be rambling, but hear me out.

In the past few years, I have been pushed to my limits.  My idea of my limits of course, not God's.  But there have been some struggles.  We had an unexpected deployment with short notice and the struggles that come with that, as well as some tough personal issues for our family.  No more or less than others, I am sure, but personally just a hard time.

In those times I had many people reach out to us trying to help.  Some were helpful, some not.  At all.

But in both cases, they often spoke the same words.  God's Words.

It got me wondering why some were such a comfort and others seemed to just about push me off the edge of the cliff I was standing way too close to at times.

It came down to this for me- TRUTH or TRITE.

Truth- Truth is that which corresponds to reality.
Trite- overused and consequently of little import; lacking in freshness or effectiveness because of constant use or excessive repetition

Now do not get me wrong, God's Word is ALWAYS truth.  Always!  And it will not come back to us void.

But sometimes the way it is shared can make all the difference in the word.  (Hang in there with me, I have spent a lot of time pondering this because it has weighed heavily on me.)

Here's what I found-
Friends who just throw a verse at you and run- that is trite!  I am not saying their hearts are not in the right place, but I will tell you that those words did not hit my heart in the right place.  What I saw instead was someone who

  • wanted to put a quick band-aid on things and hope for the best
  • was not ready to walk the dark path with me
  • who did not have time to invest
  • who popped off the first Bible verse they could remember and hoped it fit the situation
Friends who shared scripture with me and took the time to talk it out, now THAT was truth.  Yes, the same word of God maybe, but the heart behind the message seemed pure as well.  Now that may have been an unfair assessment on my part, but as my husband says often, perception is truth to the one receiving it.  These were the people who

  • showed up daily in our lives, even if not physically
  • who took the time to pray WITH us
  • who spoke truth in love and did not run from the hard things we were walking through
  • who took the time to share scripture that was truly relevant to our situation, not just a band-aid for the moment
See, I think it comes down to the heart of the person sharing.  Again, you can argue that is hard to know, but let's face it, it is usually pretty obvious.

When someone cares, you know it.  When someone hurts like you hurt, you feel it.  When someone grieves like you grieve, you see it.

And sometimes we just need to sit beside someone and hold their hand.  And just be quiet.

It can make all the difference between truth or trite.

Oh friends, let's be people who CARE, who enter into hard places with our friends and refuse to leave until they do as well, and who share God's word in love and out of love!  It makes a difference!

Go make a difference!

Blessings in Waiting

Did you know that the word wait is repeated in the Bible 88 times (ESV)?  And that does not include any variations like waiting or waited. That's a lot!

It is also a word I do not particularly like a lot.  Does anyone?

I mean really, when someone tells us yes, great!  When they tell us no, well, at least we have an answer.

But, wait?  It is so ambiguous.  It requires much more action on our part.  Or inaction even.

Either way, as my kiddos used to say when they were little, "No thank you!"

It is one thing to say "no thank you" to a parent.  It is a another thing to say "no thank you" to God!

I think the thing I have to tell myself, repeatedly it seems these days, is that "wait" from God can be a blessing.  Or, at the very least, you can find blessing in the "wait."  Guys, sometimes I really need to find a blessing!

Let me tell you a quick story.  Grab a cup of tea and some chocolate.  Lots of chocolate!

We got the adoption referral for Colby Jose when he was four months old.  We brought him home when he was 21 months old.  For those not so fast at math like me, that was a 17 month WAIT!  I always tell people, I could have almost birthed TWO kids in that time.

If you are a visual type of person, here is what that looks like.

This is the first picture we saw of him.

This is what he looked like when we were finally able to board that airplane from Guatemala to the states.

That is a BIG WAIT! Colby said, "Wow, I grew!"

It was no fun, and hard, and heart breaking at times.  But there were blessings in our time of waiting.  Many!

For example, near the last few months of our wait, things had gotten pretty rough.  We thought we had lost Colby a few times when Guatemala shut its doors to international adoption, we stopped getting updates for a few months, and then we moved, leaving behind a group of some of our biggest cheerleaders and prayer warriors.  It was a lonely, and scary time.  Somewhere during that time flowers showed up at our door from a friend with a note of encouragement.  It made my day!  The following week flowers showed up again, this time from another friend.  By the time the third week of flowers showing up, I knew something was up.  Y'all, it continued to happen until that boy of ours came home.  Some cards were signed, some contained scripture, some just a few sweet words, but every week it was like a ray of hope in the darkness and just a reassurance that we were not alone!  A friend had rallied the troops to surround us with love!

It. Was. Amazing!

And to this day I am still in awe at how God used a sweet friend to bless us beyond measure in the waiting.

I will admit I do not prefer it when God says wait.  It is against my nature to wait.  Yes, waiting is hard.

Whether you are waiting for that child you long for.

Or for the perfect job.

Or for the spouse of your dreams.

Or for that degree you want to have.

Or whatever desire God has placed on your heart.

But know this, if you look hard enough, and with an open mind and an open heart, you WILL see the blessings in waiting.

They might not all be tangible blessings, but if God has said wait- there will be blessings that await you.  Look for them.  He has a better path and a better plan, even when we cannot see it at the time.

And praise the Lord, He will often use His people to bless us during that time.

I am thankful for those people in our lives- past, present and future!

Blessings,

When Life Has You Down. Literally!

Yesterday, I snuck away from the heat and responsibilities of life and went to a friend's pool with my kiddos for an hour.  It was a much needed break from reality.

Unfortunately the reality was that I slipped getting into said pool and hurt my toe.  I thought my pride was what was hurt the worst, but nope, I think I broke my toe.  Though I kept ice on it most of last night, I woke up to a swollen, painful toe that I cannot put weight on despite my best efforts.  And it is a lovely shade of purple on top of that!

Since I refuse to go to the ER on a Sunday, I am icing it and staying off of it until I can get to the doctor on Monday.  Please pray that they do not laugh at me and that they can find a quick fix.  Ok, just not laughing would be good at this point.

I feel like an idiot! (I know, we do not use that word in our house) But really I do.

My pride hurts almost as bad as my toe.

My recent exercise goals have come to a halt and it is discouraging.  Thanks to a fit bit (more on that sometime) I have found my motivation again for exercising and watching what I eat.  The upcoming wedding helps a bit too! Haha.

I have a dear friend's wedding to attend in two weeks and new shoes to boot and now I am not sure how that is going to work out.

I have plans and ideals and expectations and right now a lot of self pity.  A lot.

Luckily, I also have a friend who just told me my pity party was over, to grab the computer, and write what God wanted me to write.

It took me a minute to think about that.  Just a minute.

I know what God wants me to say.

Pride is a bad thing.  It comes right before the fall.  Literally.

Unrealistic expectations, of ourselves and others, is a bad thing.  It only sets us up for failure.

Exercise is a good thing until it becomes obsessive and then it is a bad thing.  Anything done in excess or for the wrong reasons can be an idol.

Self pity and fear are also bad.  Those things are not founded on God's truth.  They are merely tools in the enemy's arsenal to keep us separated from God.

So what do we (go ahead, you can read I) need to do?

Take a breath and regroup.

Stop for a minute and pray.  Ask God to remind us of His promises and His purposes.

Ask Him to help us combat fear, and idolatry, and pride.

And thank Him daily for friends who love us and are bold enough to speak truth to us.

Thank you Dawn!

Believe Me- 'Ya Gotta Have Friends

This week I am participating in a 5 Day Blog Hop featuring Tips for Homeschool Parents.  A group of lovely ladies across the globe are sharing their favorite tips each day!

Feeling a little burned out from having an allergy related cough for over 6 weeks, and now a cold, I wasn't sure how I would even begin to write for five days this week.  I sometimes feel like I have written all I know about homeschooling.  But then I thought about these ladies participating, and it hit me...

F-R-I-E-N-D-S

Yep, that is it.

My tip for the day.

Sounds simple, but it is oh, so important.

You see, as I mentioned already this week, I spend 24-7 with my children.  That is a lot of KID- type conversations.  You know-

Have you done your chores?
Have you done your homework?
Be nice to your siblings.
Be nice to your mom. ;)
Stop doing that.
Please do this.
Do you need to go to the bathroom?
Can I please go to the bathroom alone?

The list goes on and on.

And while I love those kiddos dearly, I sometimes need some adult conversation.

The conversation of a friend.  One who knows what I do all day and who understands. One who wants to talk about homeschooling, and sometimes one who doesn't!

Friends!  And friend talk!

Never underestimate the value of friendship.  Seek it out, cultivate it, cherish it, and be thankful for the friends God had brought into your life!

That's What Friends Are For!

This month has been a crazy month for us. Yes, I know you are shaking your head, yes, December is crazy for everyone right?

But behind the scenes here at Family, Faith and Fridays, I have a husband who was deployed for over a YEAR return home and we bought a house and moved to another state.  In the snow , no less. On top of that I started a new position with The Schoolhouse Review Crew.  Oh, and on top of that and most importantly, I was determined to make sure my family was able to have a peaceful (well, mostly peaceful) Christmas, focused on the birth of Christ!

Yep, crazy month.

With a little, nope, A LOT, of help from some friends. we survived and manged to blog, well, they did mostly, through our December series, The Gift Of Christmas!

A BIG THANK YOU goes to these awesome friends and bloggers! And can I just mention that only one of these sweet ladies have I met in person.  They are just that generous and thoughtful! I hope you will continue to stop by their blogs and bless them with the same love you bless me with daily!

December 2nd- Robyn started us out with Prepping for Christmas.  This amazing friend, speaker, wife, mom, and Israel tour guide (she has a few spots still open for their next tour!) will inspire you and make you laugh along the way!  You can find her faith filled and humor infused stories at A Closer Walk.

December 4th- Rebeka at There Will be a $5.00 Charge for whining!  If you have not read Rebeka's blog, go now.  Her humor and realness speak to me.  And make me giggle!  And I am pretty sure we could not live near each other becasue we get nothing done amidst the giggling.

December 7th- Leah at As We Walk Along the Road shared her family's tradition of The Jesse Tree.  I love the idea of creating a family tradition that can be done year after year.  Leah is a powerful prayer warrior that blessed me throughout the past year with her loving prayers.

December 9th- Holly at Gypsy Road taught us how to make a Advent Calendar.  Holly is living my dream life traveling with her family, and makes my sons happy with all of her great Lego-schooling posts!  I think I want her life.

December 11th- Cristi at Through the Calm and Through the Storm shared her Chili and Cornbread Recipe.  As a fellow military wife (who totally gets me) and momma, this is a on-line friend I am determined to meet in person this year if it is the last thing I do!

December 14th- Carol shared a beautiful post about Seeking God that brought tears to my eyes! She blogs at Home Sweet Life, is a very talented writer, and is one of my 34 Weeks of Clean buddies!

December 16th- Tawnee from Adventures in Homeschooling shared all about new traditions you can start with your kids.  You will love this fellow military wife's Random Friday posts.  I may just have to jump on that bandwagon in January!

December 18th- Lori shared her favorite Holiday books.  Who doesn't love books?! You can find Lori at At Home: where life happens, blogging about life, her three girls, and reviewing products.  Another sweet prayer warrior!

December 23- Kym at Homeschool Coffee Break talked about the Gift of Traditions.  I love her advice on simple, togetherness and memories!  Traditions make holidays such special memories.

Wow, I am exhausted!  How about you?

We have a Christmas in pictures post going up on the 30th, and then we will start off the New Year with  some move updates, some vacation fun, and more!  Until then,

Blessings!

Don't Be a Hero?

A few weeks ago someone asked me how our family was doing.  After my standard answer of fine, I was told I didn't have to be a hero and could just ask for help. It was followed by "if you need anything, let someone know!"  Ummm, right.

I am pretty sure I smiled sweetly and gave another standard answer and walked away.

Sometimes it is just easier to give a standard answer.  It's kind of like that whole "how are you doing" thing.  Let's face it, most people don't really want to know how you are doing.  They want a smile and a quick "I'm great."  If we really launched into how we were doing every time someone asked us, I am sure people would run screaming for the hills and never ask again, right?

You see, we don't really need a thing. We need people.

There is a difference.

If I need the lawn mowed or the light changed or the oil in the car changed, I will get it done, even if I have to pay someone to do it.  Yes, it would be nice if someone came to help occasionally, but regardless, I can get that kind of thing done.

But you cannot buy company.  You can't hire someone to fill your quiet house with laughter and fun. Loneliness cannot magically be filled.

Those things require people.  Community.  Friends who are willing to take time out of their busy schedules to include others, even in the mundane of life.  To do life together.

Just for the record, I am not alone in this.  I hear it from single parents, widows, college students away from home, people who are sick or have an injury, and even the elderly.  They don't want you to tell them to call if they need anything.  If you are waiting for that call, then be prepared to wait for a long time.  I also realize that our yearlong situation pales in comparison to so many.  I praise God for what He has taught us through this -- that it has allowed my family to see needs we did not see before, to feel empathy we did not, and to understand people's hearts better.  I pray we will not miss this opportunity that God has given us to make a difference in others' lives.

Wanna make a difference?  Tell them when you are available to come visit.  Offer to pick up pizza and join them for a movie night.  Bake cookies with them.  Show up at their house to help fold clothes or take out the trash.  Pick up their child for the day and give them a rest. Remember weekends are lonely and holidays are worse.  Treat them like family, instead of some anomaly that no one knows quite what to do with.

Stop asking what you can do and tell them what you can do!  When we ask someone to let us know if they need anything, we are simple putting the responsibility back into their court and freeing ourselves of any action.  Yes, sometimes those words come from well-meaning people, I know, but just as often they are a cop-out.  I know, because I have used them.

This quote spoke to my heart months ago during a particularly hard week.  It summed up how I was feeling to a T.  Yes, in some ways I have to be a hero, because it is me or no one.  I don't do it to impress anyone or hear applause from anyone or to gain sympathy from anyone.  I do it to keep this family afloat until my husband returns.  And some days it is simply exhausting.  Most days it is very lonely. But what choice do I have?

Once again, through it all, I am thankful for friends who understand and a God that holds us close, loves us, protects us, and is OUR hero!  In the end, may He get the glory!

 Blessings,

Linking up with friends!

Gift someone with 621 Gifts!

I love blessing people with gifts.  Which is actually funny, because gifts are not really my love language.  Yes, I am always thankful when someone thinks of me with a special something, but really, I would rather bless them instead.  Because of our nomadic lifestyle, we have friends all over the country and so it can be hard to keep up with the gift giving.  The post office is just not my favorite place to frequent, and I am not good at ordering stuff I cannot see and touch.  There are just too many variables and things that can go wrong.

I have found a solution though, thanks to a friend of mine!  Let the gift giving resume!

Meet Tonya and her husband Dan!  Together they have dreamed big and created a new business called 621 Gifts.  This online shopping and gift giving experience is amazing.  It is a simple idea really.  Pick from a variety of local to the Midwest area products or let them help you pick by choosing their themed boxes, and they will ship these products to anyone you wish. Products range from soup, cookie and muffin mixes, to meat sticks, jams, sauces, and pasta.  Themes include things like For the Men, Sizzlin BBQ and Weekend Breakfast.

They have taste tested each of the products to assure you that they are all the best of the best and keep supplies on hand for a quick turn around.  The items are stylishly arranged in a pretty box and at your loved one's door step pronto!

And how does one pick?  You can view all of the products available, with new ones being added on a regular basis, on the website.  Once you choose how many items you wish to send, from 4-7 items, you can use the drop-down menus to pick your items.  There is even a tutorial if I have confused you! Graciously, Tonya offered to let us try five items of our choice.  I did make her promise not to laugh at ours, because let's just say, if you had received our box you my have thought....ummm, random or what, Michele? ;)  Yes, I promise to send more organized theme to you, my friends!

With 5 pages of items to choose from you are sure to find something perfect for anyone on your gift list.  Be on the lookout for handcrafted items to be added in the future as well and items such as homemade soaps and lotions.

That being said- I did pick winners, if I say so myself.

First up (and eaten for dessert the day the box arrived) were the Sugar and Spice Pretzels and caramel dipping sauce. Best things ever!  Everyone liked it and even our wheat free daughter got in on the action by dipping apples in the caramel.  A box of just five of these might be a good idea!  Just saying.

We also played fair and tried the Buckaroo Brownie Mix, which is Gluten Free, so said daughter did not feel left out.  Yummy as well.  We served them at a get together and even non gluten free friends said they passed the test!

Since fall is coming, I KNOW it is, I also ordered two soup mixes.  I think these are always good gifts to send people who are home bound or sick and even make good housewarming gifts.  We had one a few nights ago, the Veggie Chicken Noodle Soup and the kids loved it.  Next up is the Cheesy Broccoli Soup.

Last up is the  Cinnamon Streusel Muffin Mix.  Well, not really last, as we ate those last week!  If you have been around Family, Faith and Fridays long enough you already know that this crew loves muffins, so yes, I had to include a box!  They were yummy and Salem asked if we could make more like that.  Next box, I guess!

Why the name 621 gifts?  Tonya and Dan took from Romans 12:6-21 in which spiritual gifts are talked about as well as how we should behave towards one another and then  Matthew 6:21 - For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

In continuation of the gift giving theme, Dan and Tonya have partnered with four organizations to bless.  When you buy from their site, you are able to choose one of the four organizations to bless and a portion from the sales will go to that organization.

AND, to bless my readers, Tonya and Dan are allowing us to give away one- 5 item box to a reader!  Just fill out the rafflecopter below and a winner will be selected next Monday!  Yay!

A BIG thank you, Dan and Tonya, for allowing us to review your fabulous new business venture and for blessing us and a reader with your wonderful products.

Blessings,
