What's on the Agenda?

I know we just finished up our school year a few weeks ago, but yes, we are a week into our new year.  This year things are going to look a little different for us.  My 17 year old is a senior and will be taking British Lit with me, but everything else he will be doing online for dual-credit.  If all goes according to plan, he will have completed all of his general college classes when he heads to college next year!

So this year is primarily me and the youngest!

Our summer schedule is a bit lighter and allows us to play in the pool or with friends in the mornings, and then school for an hour or so after lunch when it is too hot to be out in Arizona.  It keeps him from getting bored and losing all the skills he learned the previous grade.  It also allows for a lighter schedule by the end of the year when we are growing weary.

7th grade here we come!

As usual we have several tried and true programs on our list, as well as a few new to us ones.  I am very excited about it all- 7th grade is typically a fun year!  I will let you know what Colby thinks after we get started!

Here's our plan-

Math- Teaching Textbooks Grade 7
Science- Masterbooks General Science 1: Survey of the Earth and Sky
History- Masterbooks The World's Story 1: The Ancients
Literature Sonlight 7th Grade
Grammar-Writing- Hake Grammar and Writing 7 and Wordly Wise
Geography- Memoria Press Geography II
Spanish- Classical Academic Press Spanish for Children A
Bible- Sonlight and Proverbs from The Nelson Kids

*This will be our first year using Masterbooks for History and Science.  Colby just finished a 5 year course from Veritas Self Paced History that we adored and needed to find something to fill in for this year.  I am wishy washy about science for 7th grade, and so that being said, I thought I would take a leap of faith and try both.  We have used several other things from Masterbooks lately and been pleased. I love how the daily guides are set up, so I will let you know how it goes.

Since we have embraced homeschooling year-round, we took off a few weeks of June to allow for a little regrouping time (mostly for me!) and then began back July 1st, with just three subjects.  We will add a subject every few weeks until we are back full swing by the end of August.  Again, the slow start allows us to go easy at first and adjust to new curriculum, but also allows for an easy end of the year when we are tired and ready for a break.

No matter when you start school or where your kiddos learn, I pray you will have a beautiful school year filled with much leaning and wonder!

Blessings,

Let's Read a Story

We love to read in our family!  From a very early age we surround our kiddos with books and pray they will love them as we do.  Thankfully, we have raised strong readers and lovers of books.  It does this momma's heart good to see them snuggled on the couch deeply engrossed in their latest book adventure.

Reading is also one of our favorite subjects in school since it involves, of course, BOOKS!  Colby's current reading program has involved simply reading a book on the 6th grade reading list and writing a short paper after he finishes each one.  Not very inspiring, but it was just what we did.  When I had the chance to review a new-to-us reading program from Mosdos Press Literature, thanks to Timberdoodle Co., I was eager to see how we would do with a more classroom typical reading program.

We have been working through this program for over a month now and I am excited to tell you about it!

What is it?
Mosdos Press Literature is a Literature and Reading program that has 6 levels.  Each level has a unique gem name-   Opal, Ruby, Coral, Pearl, Jade and Gold.  We have been using the Mosdos Jade level which is intended for 7th graders.  The set comes with a hard back student reader, a student workbook and a spiral bound teacher's guide in two parts.

While not a specific Christian program..."Mosdos Literature is a complete literature program that does not glamorize evil, nor present subject matter that is not age-appropriate. Neither does it portray as normal a cynical disregard for positive values, but reinforces the universal ideals of courage, honesty, loyalty, and compassion."  Gotta love that!

The student book is beautiful!  A solid 652 pages, it has numerous full color illustrations in it.  The book is broken into 5 parts covering different types of literature-

  • Short Stories
  • Poetry
  • Nonfiction
  • Drama
  • The Novel
Each section then is further divided into several specific focuses.  For example, in the Short story section you will focus on-

  • Recognizing plots
  • Defining character
  • Exploring settings
  • Understanding themes
  • and Putting it all together
Each selection ranges from just a page to more than several pages long.

All of the stories begin with an Intro that gives you a summary of the story, the Focus which talks about the theme and gives you some questions to be looking for while you read, and a bit about the author.  After the story you will find questions that recall facts and then some that are interpreting questions that make the student really think.  There you will also find additional things to examine and think about, as well as a creative writing assignment you can choose to do.

The student workbook then provides additional activities to further engage your student.  Each story has two vocabulary activities which include fill in the blank sections, matching, and occasionally a crossword puzzle.  Next you will find writing activities and then graphic organizing activities.  At the end of the workbook you will find a glossary for your student to use for quick reference.

The teacher's guide is pretty straight forward as well.  Each page of the student's reader in pictured so you can follow along, and additional questions labeled Guiding the Reading are listed for you to be able to guide conversations on the reading.  You will also find additional notes about the literary component you are currently studying to help you lead those discussions as well.  If there is a workbook section that ties in to that particular part of the story, it is listed for your convenience.

How we have used this and our thoughts-
Colby was very excited to try this program.  He is used to reading longer books and I think was excited to try some shorter selections.  We typically read one story a day, with me first reading the summary and additional information.  Sometimes we take turns reading but often Colby just reads aloud to me.

The following day we answer questions and discuss the story in more depth.  On the third day we do both vocabulary pages.  On our final day, we choose one more activity to do, whether a writing assignment or one of the literature/grammar based graphic organizers.  Because we are doing a separate writing program those are the activities we have chosen less often.

We have really enjoyed using the Mosdos program and are continuing to use it this year as our primary reading program,.  I have found that we enjoy the many different types of stories and reading together rather than Colby reading a long book for several weeks alone.  It has been a sweet time of togetherness as well and has exposed us to many different types of reading materials we may not have otherwise chosen.

A reading workbook is a new thing to us, but it has been a fairly easy transition.  The vocabulary activities have actually been his favorite part and I love that were expanding his vocabulary easily.  The activities have given him some new skills such as sequencing and character development.  The writing assignments are good and offer lots of space for creative thinking and writing, as well as the teaching of research and dictionary skills.

I have to say I was a little overwhelmed at first with the teacher's guide and the student workbook since those are not things we usually have.  I am also used to a day by day schedule, but have learned to appreciate the freedom one has to pick and choose without one.   I have been able to have Colby just do the worksheets I feel are beneficial to him and skip the others without the guilt.  It is freeing!  I also have found the value in the teacher's guide.  I admit I often ask pretty basic questions on our reading just to check for reading comprehension, but then stop there.  The questions presented in the teacher's guide are more in depth critical thinking questions and have been a good stretch for us to have.  The guide is very public school oriented but can easily be adapted for a homeschooler easily.

All in all, we are quite pleased with Mosdos Press Literature and are thankful we have had the chance to explore it.  It is a positive change to our year and one we will continue to use.

Mosdos Jade is part of the 7th grade curriculum kit from Timberdoodle, and can also be purchased separately.

And What About Curriculum?

So glad you are back!  So far we have talked about myths debunked and organization! It is my prayer that you have been blessed so far by this blog hop and all involved.  There is a wealth of information out there!  Here are a few of my favorites for you to check out-

Back to Homeschool Blog Hop

I will be the first to tell you that homeschooling is about so much more than curriculum.  So much more.  And that is a post for later in the week.  But let's face it, you NEED curriculum.  Well, most of us do.  I do know that their are "unschoolers" out there that do a good job at using the world around them to teach their children, but I am just not one of those teachers.  I like books and workbooks and notebooks and paper.

After 16 years of this homeschooling journey, I feel like we have used just about everything out there. My oldest, who got to be the guinea pig for most of it, would agree!  While I do not pretend to have all the answers, I love mentoring new homeschoolers on their curriculum choices.  It is one of the reason this blog was born.
There are a lot of good things out there. The problem is you cannot use it all at once.  Eventually you have to choose what you think is best for your child and then forge ahead.

This is a big year for us.  We are making some serious changes in what I have done in the past.  It is scary and exciting all at once. And I reserve the right to change paths at any given moment. ;)

We will talk about high school tomorrow but for now, here is what we are using for my 2nd and 7th grader.

2nd Grade

Reading- Alternating weeks
                 Sonlight 2nd grade readers
                 Explode the Code
and
                 Lightening Literature
A Beka Language Arts Seatwork Text
                 * I KNOW this seems overkill to many, but my son LOVES to read, hence the multitude of books and I BELIEVE in a early intro to language arts.  To break up the possible monotony, we will alternate our weeks.

Spelling- All About Spelling Level 3
*I have raved about this program before but I will do it again.  I have used just about every spelling program out there and this is THE one I am convinced you should start with.  After they learn the rules and basics, save yourself some time and frustration and move on to Spelling Power.

Math- Horizons from Alpha and Omega
*We have always used Saxon in the past, but are thrilled to have been given the chance to review Alpha and Omega's 2nd grade math program.  Look for our review at the end of the year.

History- Veritas Press Old Testament and Ancient Egypt
*This began as a review product that has captured us completely.  We are currently on lesson 62 and my son asks to do multiple lessons a day.  Despite the price, I would recommend this to everyone.   I do not want to miss a lesson myself as we are learning so much.  Some things are worth the money.  This is one of them.

Science- Nancy Larson Science
*You can click the link and read why we switched to this science and are enjoying it!

Bible- Bible Study Guide for All Ages
*Another review item that we continue to reorder because we like it that much.  A perfect way to start our school day.

Spanish- Homeschool Spanish Academy
*Another review item that we love.  CJ Skypes weekly with Mrs. Rosa in Guatemala, his birth country, and learns from the best!  We also continue to review Flip Flop Spanish other days of the week.

Writing- Write Shop B
*Can you guess? Yes, another product we found through reviewing for the Schoolhouse Review Crew.  It brings me great joy to say that at least one of my boys likes to write! ;)

7th Grade

Reading- Lightning Literature and Composition 7th grade
                * After years of using Sonlight readers, we are walking away.  I just feel this is a better fit for my son and we are excited to be using it.  You can read my review of the 8th grade program, which we will pick up again next year.

Spelling- Spelling Power

Math- Teaching Textbooks 7
*In the past we switch from Saxon to TT about 5th grade.  Each year I am more and more impressed with this program.

History- Notgrass- Uncle Sam and You
*This another big change for us.  Up until last year, we have used Sonlight History.  While it was a good fit for my daughters, not so much for my son.  We used America the Beautiful from Notgrass last year and loved it.  My son is the one who asked if we could continue with this company. I think that speaks volumes for this history buff!

Science- Apologia's General Science
*This is one I have struggled with as I think Apologia is just hard sometimes.  Good, but hard.  But after seeing the notebook available for this one, I was sold.  It is my favorite of all we have used so far and makes the course seem less intimidating.

Bible-  Apologia's What on Earth Can I Do?
            * We began this as a review, took a break and are now continuing on.  An excellent apologetics series.

Spanish- Spanish for Children- Primer A from Classical Academic Press
*My second daughter used this years ago and we just feel it is one of the strongest out there for not only speaking but to learn grammar as well.  Since it has DVDs and CDs, it is a good fit for my auditory learner.

Writing- Institute for Excellence in Writing
*Yes, Andrew Peduwa is one of the BEST writing teachers out there in my opinion.  Considering his popularity, many agree.  When it comes to upper level writing, I don't want anyone to teach my kids but him!

And high school?  Well, let's chat tomorrow about that!
Don't forget about the great giveaway!

Blessings,
